What Notion AI does
Notion AI is an assistant built into the editor, not bolted on from a sidebar. You invoke it with the spacebar or slash command and it acts on whatever is on the page: draft text, summarise notes, extract action items, translate, or change the tone of a paragraph. That much has been true for a while.
What changed significantly in 2025 and 2026 is the agentic layer. Notion Agent can now run up to 20 minutes of autonomous work across your workspace without you watching it. You point it at a project, it reads up to 50 pages of context, creates documents, builds databases, and queries connected apps like Slack and Google Drive. AI Meeting Notes transcribes conversations and surfaces the action items. Custom Agents handle recurring workflows on a schedule or trigger, whether you are at your desk or not.
You can also choose your model: GPT-5.2, Claude Opus 4.5, Gemini 3, or Auto. Auto picks the best fit per task. That flexibility is genuinely useful if you work across different content types.
Pricing
Notion restructured its AI pricing in 2025. The $10 add-on is gone. Here is how the tiers stack up as of June 2026. Confirm on Notion's pricing page before committing.
| Plan | Price (annual) | AI included |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 20 total AI responses, no top-up option |
| Plus | $10/user/mo | 20 total AI responses, no top-up option |
| Business | $20/user/mo | Full AI: Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search |
| Enterprise | Custom | Everything in Business plus admin controls and SSO |
| Custom Agents | +$10/1,000 credits | Add-on on top of Business/Enterprise; no credit rollover |
The Business plan bills at $24/user/month on a monthly contract. Annual saves 17 per cent. Custom Agents credits do not roll over, so model usage carefully if your team runs scheduled workflows at volume.
Good at / struggles
- Works where your notes actually live; no context switching
- Notion Agent handles multi-step research and doc creation without hand-holding
- AI Meeting Notes is one of the tighter meeting-to-action-item pipelines available
- Model choice (GPT, Claude, Gemini) gives you a fallback when one output misses
- Enterprise Search across Slack and Google Drive in a single query
- Business plan is the floor for real AI use; Free and Plus users get a token 20 responses
- Custom Agent credits add up fast at volume; pricing feels opaque until you see the bill
- As a standalone AI writing tool it is not better than Jasper or Claude; the value is workspace integration
- Teams not already in Notion face a steeper onboarding cost than a dedicated AI tool
Top alternatives
- Jasper for marketing teams needing brand voice control and campaign workflows at scale
- Coda AI for teams who want a structured database-plus-AI workspace with a more flexible pricing model
- Mem AI for solo users who want an AI-native notes app without the Notion overhead

Who it is for
Notion AI makes most sense for teams that already use Notion daily and are on or moving to Business. The AI is additive, not transformative, for people who spend fewer than a few hours a week in the product. At $20/user/month you are paying a real price, and it should feel like a real upgrade. For most active Notion teams it does. For everyone else, a standalone AI writing tool at $10 to $15 per month is probably the smarter place to start.
FAQ
Is Notion AI free?
Free and Plus plan users get 20 total AI responses with no option to buy more. Full Notion AI, including Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, and Enterprise Search, requires the Business plan at $20/user/month billed annually.
Can I buy Notion AI as a standalone add-on?
No. The $10/user/month standalone add-on was retired in May 2025. Notion AI is now bundled into the Business and Enterprise plans only. If you are on Free or Plus, you cannot unlock more AI responses by paying extra.
What AI models does Notion AI use?
You can choose between GPT-5.2, Claude Opus 4.5, and Gemini 3, or use Auto mode, which picks the best model for each task. Model selection is per-workspace for Business plans.
What are Notion Custom Agents?
Custom Agents are automated workflows that run on a schedule or trigger without you being online. They bill at $10 per 1,000 Notion credits on top of any Business or Enterprise plan. Credits do not roll over month to month, so plan usage carefully if you run high-volume recurring tasks.
